A British supermarket is shrink-wrapping crabs while they’re still alive

A Korean supermarket in London has shocked shoppers by selling live crabs wrapped in plastic.

‘The shop has been criticised for packaging the crustaceans in polystyrene and cling film with elastic bands holding their legs and claws together.

The crabs are for sale at Korea Foods in New Malden, south-west London, and spend their final days in chiller cabinets alongside fish fillets.

Shopper Cheryl Willis said: ‘It’s like keeping a cow in a really small cage until you sell it to kill and eat it. If they’re going to sell it and it’s still alive it should be in an open space.’

A staff member said: ‘Some English people might be sensitive… We try to sell the crabs fresh, that is our main concern.’

Environmental officers from Merton council found nothing illegal when they investigated.
The RSPCA said the Animal Welfare Act 2006 doesn’t apply to crabs, but it still opposed cruel methods of selling the creatures.’

Here’s their Facebook page. You can leave a one star review or send them an e-mail. ***DO NOT send racially/ culturally abusive content to them. Remember that it is these very separations and conflicts that cause people to excuse cruelty to certain beings in the first place. DO NOT tear yourself down to that level. NO tolerance for racism.***

****Since two hours ago, they have stated:

Korea Foods recognises the concerns raised in the media recently, relating to the sale of live crabs. We have already taken action, as recommended by our local council, and have already contacted the RSPCA to discuss how we might further improve our practices, which we will then implement as soon as is feasible. We are no longer offering the sale of live crabs until this issue is resolved.

Still bear in mind that a review can be sent to ensure that they do not even consider bringing back this practice.****
