Bring your dogs i n s i d e. They get cold too. Fur coats are not enough to protect dogs in very cold temperatures. Very low temperatures can cause a dog’s body temperature to fall, leading to hypothermia. If for some reason your dog must stay outdoors, consider letting them sleep in the garage or basement when the weather gets to be too much for them (ex: snow, heavy rain, thunderstorms).

The following list includes but are not limited to {tips} for your dog to stay warm & comfortable while living outdoors. »»

• Your dog MUST have adequate shelter - not half a dog house with a big hole in the side or the roof of a dog house. A WHOLE dog house in which your dog can turn around and curl up in, comfortably.

• It’s a good idea and for the sake of the dog there should be a wind flap on the door (burlap or heavy plastic would work).

• The bottom of the dog house should be raised off of the ground about two inches or so.

• There should be bedding in the house for the dog to stay warm. (ex: cedar chips, old comforter you don’t use anymore, blankets or you could even staple or glue a chunk of carpet onto the dog house floor.)

• Make sure that your dog’s water does not become frozen. Your dog can not drink ice. If you work a lot or out most of the day, look into buying a heated dog bowl. They can be found at Petsmart!
