TEST: Pedaltrain Floorboards
Here, the male tinkering instinct with a penchant for gigantic dimensions lead to sometimes square meter-like board outgrowths, which require their own case, in which otherwise only live mixers from AC/DC are transported. To avoid such excesses, which is particularly due to the excessive cable routing, the company Pedaltrain raised the two-dimensional wooden board to a three-dimensional ramp and a system was born, which offered plenty of space for underground cable routing due to the strut-based frame construction. Simple, but effective.
For the test we have not only a selection of the current Pedaltrain boards, but also 2 power supplies from our own production along with a small detail solution, which has it in itself.
Construction
All effect pedal boards are based on the same concept. A frame made of aluminum is strengthened by cross braces and offers through the slots the possibility to lay the cabling under the board. The former manufacturing from the USA has now also been moved to China, which unfortunately led to losses in the quality of the gig bags. The small weaving errors here and there and the sometimes somewhat lovelessly riveted rubber feet of the boards are not particularly noticeable, the consistently inferior zippers of the bags unfortunately are. Not one that would not display the usual hooking in the corners, here Pedaltrain should definitely improve in my opinion.

With the Pedaltrain Classic 2 SC, we come for the first time in the area that Pedaltrain has applied for a patent, due to the sloping support surface. Due to the height of over 30 cm, 2 small pedals can be mounted one behind the other, which almost doubles the number of effects compared to the previous two models. In order not to perish in the battery swamp, it is at the latest here time to think about an external power supply. From the approach almost identical to the Pedaltrain Classic 2 SC, but due to the height of almost 37 cm on 2 larger pedals find space on the board in a row.
Pedaltrain Powertrain 1250
While in the beginning one was still dependent on third-party manufacturers such as Voodoo Lab, Pedaltrain has now also gone over to offering its own products for this market segment. Of course, the special features of their own designs can be taken into account, such as the low installation height below the struts. The Pedaltrain Powertrain 1250 meets the specified dimensions and can be attached with the bombproof method of screwing in addition to the Velcro variant.
To do this, take the supplied drilling template, get extended threaded screws (be careful, it could be inch thread, try carefully!) and place the power supply in a suitable place. In terms of features, the Pedaltrain Powertrain 1250 is an ornament to its guild. Firstly, the product has a voltage selection between 220 - 240 V, respectively 110 - 120 V. Furthermore, the Pedaltrain Powertrain 1250 is one of the few power supplies which also provides 18 V DC if required. The corresponding output can even be switched between 18 V, 15 V, 12 V and 9 V at 150 mA. Three additional 9 V outputs at 210 mA each can mimic a weakening 9 V battery in their voltage output by means of a small screwdriver to capture the legendary sound of Eric Johnson. Lastly, we have 4 regular 9 V outputs, which do not exceed 500 mA in their total output. However, since most pedals get by on 100 - 200 mA anyway, this shouldn't be a problem.
Pedaltrain Volto
The highlight of the test setup, however, is a soap mold-like white plastic case and goes by the name Volto. Basically nothing more than a 2000 mA high-capacity battery, it replaces the flood of 9 V batteries in a very slim case that can even be stuck under Nano and Metro 20 boards. Equipped with 2 pieces of 9 V outputs and two daisy-chain cables, theoretically 6 effect pedals can be supplied with sufficient power. At about 200 mA on average, this would mean an average of 10 hrs.
A new charge of the product takes about 6 hours, an appropriate power supply along with a short cable is included with the product. In case of doubt, however, the cigarette lighter of the band bus or the local mobile charger will also do.
Pedaltrain Pedal Booster PBK
What a help a bent piece of sheet metal can be. Short problem description: Two identically high pedals behind each other on the board, you want to switch the rear effect on/off and thereby adjust the potentiometers of the front effect unit or break them off in the worst case. Remedy: The Pedal Booster removes the slant of the board, the On/Off switch is raised, the problem is solved. So simple, so good!
Practice
The practical operation of the boards can be dealt with quickly. They do exactly what they are supposed to do. Thanks to the aluminum construction, the boards are very light and can be transported easily. In terms of workmanship, a little more care could be taken here and there, but let's be honest, with a pedalboard, it doesn't really matter if there is possibly still a weld on the underside.
The included Velcro is neat, however, I personally always prefer the attachment with cable ties. Even the strongest Velcro can jerk loose, for example, when transported upright in the band bus. The gig bags protect the effects very well, but as already mentioned suffer from the below-average zippers.
The two power supplies Pedaltrain Powertrain 1250 and Powertrain Volto leave a very good impression, although one should think again around the corner with the flagship battery Volto. 10 hrs of use means "can", not "must". If you have, for example, a high-quality reverb in FX mode, you may gladly deal with 2-3 hours of operation.
Furthermore, effects in the serial FX loop of your amp, Volto empty, means amp dead! My tip, leave an emergency battery in the effect pedal, pull the power plug in an emergency and bring the show to an end with battery voltage. Furthermore, once the Volto is empty it needs a minimum charge to be able to supply the effects with voltage again during the ongoing charging operation. The Volto is not an iPhone battery!
And last but not least, test if your effects work in daisy chain mode. There are some effects that require their own output, no matter how much mA is behind it, which in turn means that in the worst case you will only have power for 2 effects pedals!
Conclusion
The class leader in terms of effect boards shows many strengths and marginal weaknesses in the current edition. As before, Pedaltrain shines with an innovative concept and fills the gap to a very good sole supplier by upgrading the portfolio with stand-alone power supplies and additional products. The Powertrain 1250 and Volto power supplies show excellent detailed solutions and will quickly become an industry standard in my opinion.
The quality drop in the workmanship caused by the Chinese production should be easily controlled by better final inspection and higher-quality components.

No, it is not a particularly strenuous groupie, rather we are talking about the power supply of the personalized pedalboard, which in terms of complexity and problems already fills entire forums worldwide with tons of tips, tricks and sometimes adventurous detailed solutions.
Aware of this, the "Mother-Of-All-Modern-Pedalboards", the American manufacturer Pedaltrain has brought with the Pedaltrain Spark a power supply on en market, which comes up with some very interesting detail solutions. So then, look down and ran to the Tretminen.
the problem
I don't know about you, but I guess that when you have made your first steps on a six-string guitar at the tender age of 12 and up, and the first power chord sounds reasonably clean on the practice amp, you want to know in a second step what strange boxes your personal idols have lying on the floor in front of them.

the novelty
Well, nice and flat is the Pedaltrain, but now the Gretchen question, how do I attach the product to, respectively under the board? The actual novelty is so simple that it almost hurts, but in fact none of the previous pedalboard suppliers seemed to be interested in such a concept. To be able to place the Pedaltrain Spark on any board of the Pedaltrain series, you take a metal bracket plus 2 metal screws and screw the power supply from above onto the board, done, out! Exactly as simple as it sounds, it is also .... at first sight ...?
First look? A problem? No problem, but a design feature that could have used a little explanation in the manual. To test the Pedaltrain Spark in the wild, a new Pedaltrain Nano board was included. All is well, all is well, Pedaltrain Spark is screwed in place and .... the power supply slides back and forth underneath the board! Incomprehension spreads among the tester. Wrong dimensions? Monday production? Or incompetence of the tester?
A short phone call with the German sales department brought the solution. I was allowed to join the long line of colleagues who had made the same mistake. The dimensions of the bracket are designed so that on the pedal must already be the Velcro strips on which the retaining bracket is placed. These 2 millimeters make the difference between slippery sliding and bombproof hold. OK, you could have possibly come up with it yourself, but a simple reference in the manual would have been very helpful.
The accessories

With an optimal combination, it would thus be theoretically possible to supply up to 13 pedals with the Pedaltrain Spark with voltage.
ATTENTION, small tip from practice, happened to me during a show at the Wacken Open Air. If you use a daisy chain cable, where not all sockets are used, tape the free sockets, so that the positive pole can not come against ground. In my case, a free cable end came to a metal grid on the stage floor during the show and caused my effects to be turned on and off haphazardly over and over again. TEST: Peavey XR 1220
power mixer! Ouch, I can already see the first of them squinting their eyes tightly, while the rest of the pack storms towards the exit of the room, screaming because of their forcibly acquired experiences in the past.
Don't we all know the drama, especially the writer of this article? Hopelessly undersized power amplifiers with 1x 120 watts mono, 4 channels, one of which has cinch inputs, no proper gain control and a 7-band hum equalizer for the already pressureless overall concept? And then please set up the supplied "boxes" at ear height in front of you at a distance of 20 centimeters, so that you have even the slightest chance of asserting yourself against the bass drum alone. An ice-cold shiver runs down my spine, it was horrible, lousy, out of the question!
Alternatively, you could of course choose the slightly more powerful variation from other manufacturers (2x 150 watts - Hoho!), which then switched off at regular intervals of about 30 minutes due to overheating due to the poor ventilation concept when placed in a rack. The good atmosphere at rehearsals and shows was programmed right away, including a refreshing announcement from the organizer... Oh yes, the construction was incredibly heavy and pretty unwieldy, of course!
Due to digital power amplifiers, such power mixer horror scenarios are definitely a thing of the past, at least if you can believe the performance specifications of the Peavey XR 1220 mixer I was testing. 2x 600 watts at 4 ohms speak a clear language and also want to convince in the context of a noisy rock band.
construction
The Peavey XR 1220 is a 20-channel mixer with an internal stereo power amplifier. As is almost always the case with products in this price range, the motto here is "Designed in the USA, assembled in China". Occasionally one wonders whether any product of stage and studio technology is still not built in the same totalitarian state.
In addition to the easier handling compared to a separate construction of mixer and power amplifier, there is also no wiring, which, for example, significantly reduces the assembly time of the product. In general, it is noticeable that the designers have primarily devoted themselves to the "all-in-one" vocal system use, so the product also has a built-in multi-FX unit and a stereo equalizer. Everything together weighs just under 11 kilograms, which used to weigh just one mains transformer of a Peavey CS 800.
In terms of connection technology, the input section runs in the usual way, that is to say XLR, or line input via jack plus loop-in point in front of the catch-up amplifier. Behind the gain controller and a subsonic filter at 80 Hz is a classic three-band tone control (shelving treble +/- 15 dB - 12 kHz), (shelving bass +/- 18 dB - 80 Hz), (bandpass low mids +/- 15 dB - 450 Hz) and a combined two-band high-mid controller, which starts at a reduction of 2 kHz up to - 15 dB and increases the range by 4 kHz up to + 15 dB.
Two pre-fade monitor outs support the live character of the product, followed by the panorama control, a clip LED, a signal LED, a mute switch, a 60 mm fader and a PFL switch. So far, so standard. Channels 19 and 20 manage any stereo signals that may occur, such as keyboards, or feed various stereo lines such as notebooks or MP3 players.
In the total area, greater attention was paid to eliminating any feedback, in accordance with the primary area of application of the product. The mixer has the RTA connection of a measurement microphone. Over two test runs, the mixer, in combination with the test microphone and noise generator, analyzes any feedback loops that may occur and adjusts the equalizer accordingly.
In addition to the standard full-range operation, the product can also be operated as a satellite solution plus an external active woofer or as a double mono full-range plus a passive monitor. Furthermore, the classic active monitor solution is of course possible via the respective sends. A small P.A. can also be connected via two regular XLR outs. be approached while using the internal power amplifier for the operation of the monitors. On the back, the XR 1220 comes with a (tacky) on/off switch, the IEC connector and four Speakon connections (2x left / right each).
Practice
Even if the idea of protecting the environment is commendable, it is impractical to only include the manual as a CD-ROM and not even have a quick-start sheet at the start. My god, how long has the Peavey company been around? That must be decades, since the company around namesake Hartley Peavey was already a household name when I was young. At that time, Peavey had a reputation like Dynacord in this country, i.e. covering the entire product range, from the small suitcase amp to the extensive vocal system. In his time, however, Peavey became known primarily through the sometimes quite extensive backlines of the southern rock combos, which were extremely successful in the States, such as MOLLY HATCHET or 38 SPECIAL. While almost the entire rock landscape in Europe was firmly in the Marshall grip, in the former Confederate strongholds piled up on the stages with hitherto unknown stacks and combos.
The fact that Peavey can now also build first-class guitars and basses is not only known since the collaboration with Eddie van Halen, but the trademark is not directly associated with instrument building, especially in Europe. The two "Godfathers-Of-Electric-Guitar" and their successful nephews in the style of PRS were and are too powerful to give Peavey an international piece of the American cake.

If you look at the instrument for the first time, you need about 1 second to guess the father of the JD-Omniac. Form and concept reveal said Telecaster as a godfather, but without being dismissed as a mere copy. Many details have been tailored to the artist, but are clearly in the tradition of the first industrially manufactured series electric guitar in the world.
The body of the guitar is made of two parts of ash, with a larger main part covering approx. 80% of the body area and a smaller strip taking over the upper area. The body is framed in one piece, opaque high-gloss black on the sides and painted in blueburst on the front and back. Alternatively, the instrument is also available in the colors Sunburst or Vintage Natural.
The neck was screwed to the body with 5 (!) screws countersunk in the body, with a soft rounding of the body below the neck foot significantly increasing the playing comfort in the high registers. The neck was milled from a piece of bird's eye maple and shows clear concessions to the artist. On the one hand, we have a very strongly curved fretboard, which makes playing chords much easier, but at the expense of the string action and an extravagant V-shaping, which might take some getting used to for one or the other.
If you like to use the thumb of the gripping hand to help form chords, this shaping is indeed a very good profile, since the lower part of the V presses exactly into the depression between thumb and forefinger and thus ensures optimal grip. However, those who prefer the thumb-on-the-back-of-the-neck fingering may experience some problems with the shaping. Conclusion: try it!
The scale of the instrument is 25 1/2 inches, while the neck is equipped in Tele tradition with only 21 vintage frets. A Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue Signature pickup is used in the bridge position and a Custum Seymour Duncan in the neck position. If you now go and instruct a manufacturer to produce such an optimized instrument, the result can be unusual, sometimes crude, but rarely pure mainstream. This is also the case with the JD Omniac. Mr. Donahue must have given very detailed specifications, since the general handling and especially the neck shaping set a completely unique direction.
The general trend towards the Telecaster can be felt in every fibre, but not without bringing its own component or improvement into play. In particular, the Seymour Duncan pickups leave an excellent impression. Attack, liveliness and assertiveness are at the highest level and add value to the construction.
Conclusion
Even if the world of electric guitars has drawn attention to itself in recent years, primarily due to a confusing flood of mainstream Chinese copies selling for less than €100, they still exist, the sometimes unknown pearls of the guitar guild , far away from the pure fixation on the fast euro. The Peavey JD Omniac is definitely one of them.
The JD Omniac is an instrument for specialists, which is guaranteed to polarize the user group due to various components such as neck shaping, bridge construction and other small things. However, those who were influenced by the Telecaster in terms of playing technique will know the feeling of "fighting" with their instrument and will certainly develop a more direct approach to the Omniac.

TEST: Peavey IPR 1600
Eager readers of my power amp test reports may have already noticed that the company name "Peavey" is used quite often, especially in the introduction to my articles. One of the reasons for this is that my "performance-related formative phase" in terms of power amplifier technology was directly linked to the American company. As with all up-and-coming young artists, I had the most technical problems in the rehearsal room in amplifying the vocal area, which was repeatedly expressed in whistling microphones and clippings from the poor power mixers of the time.
The measure of all things were the first consoles of the Mackie generation and as a reinforcement element, Peavey CS 400 or CS 800, their character a sure guarantee for a performance without interruption and, in their first generation, for the nearness of the first herniated disc with incorrect lifting technique. Those times are long gone. Thanks to Class D technology and significantly thinner sheet steel, power packs weighing a hundredweight have outgrown the weight classes of a Fischer kit and the manufacturing facilities of the national pride of the Americans have long provided jobs in the low-wage country of China. The Peavey IPR 1600 comes in the standard height of 2 height units and the dimensions: 89 mm x 483 mm x 282 mm and with a weight of only 3.23 kilograms it is about to take the top spot in the field of lightweight construction. It should be clear to everyone that this weight cannot be combined with a solid construction. The sheets of the IPR 1600 are designed in a very thin and at the same time not very torsion-resistant variant. To what extent twisting of a housing is ever an issue is another question, but as I said, the design cannot be considered massive. There is also a little play between the individual sheet metal elements, but this does not detract from a general clean processing level.
In terms of performance, the power amplifier is in the midfield of current Class D power amplifiers, i.e. 2x 530W / 4Ohm, 2x 800W / 2Ohm and 2x 300W / 8Ohm. In terms of input, XLR / jack combo sockets are available, which allow a daisy chain arrangement via a thru output. 2 Speakon are available as outputs. All plugs function properly, but have a rather cheap plastic finish. Although all connectors are screwed to the housing for strain relief, they are otherwise soldered directly to the circuit board. There are no strong pole shoes or even peer-to-peer soldering here.
The power amplifier provides three operating modes with the designations "Hi Pass", "Full Range" and "Subwoofer", whereby an integrated 100Hz crossover, switchable per channel, specifies the crossover frequency. The product is cooled by a variable-speed fan on the back of the housing. Among other things, the patented DDT speaker circuit is at work as a protective circuit. On the front, 2 level controls, combined with 5 LEDs, which provide information about on/off, the signal present, the protection circuit, temperature and direct current, set the tone.
If you open the case, you quickly realize why the power amp is so extremely light, the case is about 70 percent filled with air. I can't quite understand why Peavey doesn't use a smaller format, such as the half rack format, with such an excess of unused space. I'm thinking of an attractive handbag-sized format here, but the marketing department must have had other things in mind.
Even if the additional carrying straps on the front of the case make transport easier, they make placement in the rack a little more difficult. The attached screwdriver will scrape off the paint on the carrying straps with the first twist, that's for sure.
Practice
Anyone who still believes that what is basically just a workhorse like a power amp is all about the inner values will be taught a lesson by the IPR 1600 at the latest. Similar to how some guitar amplifier manufacturers have switched to the principle of optical puppet theater by illuminating the internal components with LEDs or fluorescent tubes, Peavey is also trying to breathe a "hip" character into his product by means of visual "pimping".

In addition to a balanced XLR Direct Out, the Peavey Invective has a switchable master volume, whose level can be adjusted on the back, there are 2 switchable FX loops and 2x 9V outputs with a total of 500 mA for appropriate floor FX pedals. The Peavey Invective in practice
In the various pre-announcements, Peavey has placed particular emphasis on the clean channel, especially since its predecessors quickly split the musician base in this regard into 2 camps. The clean channel of the Peavey Invective, on the other hand, should unite both camps, as it indeed leaves a good impression. It sounds warm, is quite resistant to overdriving and has enough headroom for an assertive sound.
The sound character changes abruptly as soon as the Boost channel is activated. The drive is set very high for a clean boost, so that you immediately find yourself in the crunch range. The sound becomes somewhat dull, but knows how to please as an additional sound option. The actual field of application of the Peavey Invective, however, reveals itself from the Crunch channel upwards. The amp was advertised in advance as the ultimate metal amp and I have rarely gotten my hands on a head that goes so uncompromisingly in this direction.
The basic character of the two channels Crunch and Lead leans on its predecessors of the 6 series, so the latent Scoop-heavy sound is no surprise. However, I do not really understand the uncompromising interpretation of the four sound options Crunch, Cruch Boost, Lead and Lead Boost. Already the Crunch channel is extremely highly compressed and has gain reserves that are not even reached elsewhere in the Lead channel. At the same time, the channel sounds a bit busy despite the strong treble content, which is to the detriment of the assertiveness. You can hear it in the attached sound file that the guitar struggles a bit in the band structure despite sufficient volume.
This basic tonal orientation continues in the other three stages, only the gain portion and the treble range continue to increase. For a heavy riff thunderstorm, especially in the downtuning range, these sounds are very well suited, but for me personally, the ultra-compressed sound pushes the individual playing culture too much in the direction of a lack of dynamic possibilities.
Another problem is the placement of the noise gate in the signal path. As it seems, the noise gate picks up the signal very early at the amplifier, possibly even right after the input jack. This means that any electromagnetic interference, which is picked up by the pickup and amplified by any pedals before the preamp, is well intercepted during pauses in playing. The inherent noise of the amplifier, however, is not eliminated, which is not clear to me. Especially in the lead channel, the amp is very noisy, so much so that during breaks in the performance, for example during an announcement by the singer, the channel has to be changed, or else it sets off nasty looks from the center of the stage. It must be said, unfortunately, such a noise gate makes no sense in my eyes, because it does not serve its purpose.

The Peavey Invective is an amp that has been uncompromisingly pushed in the direction of metal in terms of its orientation. The 6 basic sounds convince with a very good clean sound, a boosted clean sound for crunch sounds and 4 highly compressed metal sounds, which differ sonically primarily in the gain and treble starting point.
The amp leaves a fat scent mark especially in the downtuning area in terms of riff thunderstorms, but in my opinion it could have been raised much more flexible and open in sound due to its switching technical possibilities. Details such as a 9V power supply for floor pedals and the luxurious footswitch please the experienced musician, but the manufacturer should think again about the placement of the noise gate in the signal path.

TEST: Peavey Eurosys
It is interesting to observe, the technology develops with nice continuity, while the basic needs of the artist have not changed for decades. One of these basic needs is a transportable, well-made and yet inexpensive small P.A., which one can transport alone if possible or better in pairs in a minibus together with a clear backline. I don't know how many shows had to be canceled in my early days, because a willing pub or club promoter had been found, but did not have a house system and shied away from renting an external P.A. for cost reasons.
At that time, vocal systems consisted either of the infamous power mixers of the first hour, which with 2x 100 watts did not even bring the vocals home without clippings, or else Wämsern a la "Voice Of Theater", which alone with the bass bins called for a 7.5 tonner. Clear solutions in the style of two subwoofers plus powerful satellite solutions were at the time an unfulfilled dream, which should establish itself, however, only in the last decade as a fixed component of the sound reinforcement technology.
On the other side are the passive solutions, which want to be operated via external power amplifiers, but thereby also generate a higher flexibility along with a lower purchase price. If you want to move the woofer alone, you should keep this in mind, especially since the woofer always has to be picked up from the floor. The matching Eurosys 700 satellites feature a 2-way system, which is composed of a 12-inch woofer and a 175T compression driver, with the driver's dispersion angle set at 90 degrees x 45 degrees. According to the manufacturer, the speakers have a sound pressure of 96 db and a power of 350 watts into 4 ohms. The same have the same textured paint on the surface and a corresponding protective grille. As expected, the speaker stand flange is located on the bottom of the cabinet.
As with the subwoofer mentioned above, the satellites are still in the moderate range with dimensions of 560 mm x 445 mm x 385 mm and a weight of 21.5 kilograms, but a second person is recommended for the assembly. On the rear, the speaker has the same connections as the subwoofer, i.e. Speakon/jack as a combo jack. Here, too, there is no possibility to set a crossover frequency and decouple the frequency response from the woofer.
Together with the subwoofers, the Eurosys set has a total power handling of almost 750 watts per side, which is enough to put pressure on a small club or a city festival. The factory setting of an impedance of 4 ohms, both for the subwoofer and the satellites, seems interesting here. This has the advantage that you can use the power of a connected amplifier optimally, but there is a risk of driving the amplifier down to 2 ohms in daisy chain operation. Especially the asymmetrical shape of the Eurosys 700 suggests a coupling of two satellites for lateral sound reinforcement, so you should always keep an eye on the minimum impedance of the power amplifiers.
Practice
The individual components of the set are quickly and easily assembled, provided one has the necessary strength to lift the satellites onto the distance rods. Otherwise, the entire setup is completely set up and ready to go in no time at all; it's hard to get a small P.A. up and running faster than that.
The individual components of the speaker arrangement make a very good impression in terms of workmanship, the handles fit snugly and at the optimal angle. The textured paint used doesn't leave any deep grooves or cracks, even when the components are used heavily, and thus maintains a high resistance to external influences.
The spacer bars in particular make a good impression. While many competitors often just use these components as a gimmick, Peavey has put a little more thought into this. The rods are black anodized, thus immune to the notorious flash rust and do not leave that unpleasant feeling when you handle steel or nickel tubes with bare hands. In addition, the smear of the hands is not as obvious as, for example, with nickel-plated tubes.
In practice, the combination of 18"/12" and tweeter horn has proven to be a generally capable combination for satellite/woofer operation. I personally miss with many 15" / driver satellites sometimes a midrange, which results from the inertia of the woofer. Therefore, the combination I have fits into the expected sound picture.
