TEST: Pioneer RM-05

 Am I just imagining this, or have coaxial speaker systems become much more popular lately? In any case, the significantly increased selection of products speaks for it. The overall lower space requirement is also very popular, especially with small home studios. If then also a product line technically rather blank sheet, but economically a heavyweight like Pioneer takes on this system, the interest in the product increases again. In any case, the Japanese group has brought several near-field monitors onto the market with the RM series, with the Pioneer RM-05 being available for testing.

Like almost all current near-field monitors, the Pioneer RM-05 made in China is an active monitor. The tweeter and woofer are each fed 50 watts, with the crossover frequency being 1.7 kHz. A 5-inch aramid fiber woofer and a 1.5-inch aluminum hard dome tweeter are used, with the latter sitting behind a small grille for protection and surrounded by a subtle waveguide.

When the box is activated, a small white LED lights up on the front housing, which changes to red in the event of an overload. Speaking of the case, despite the comparatively small case dimensions of 203 mm x 281 mm x 225 mm, the asymmetrical case weighs a whopping 9.3 kilograms. This is due to the fact that the box is not made of MDF as usual, but of die-cast aluminum. This makes it almost impossible for resonance frequencies to oscillate. In addition, Pioneer installed the "AFAST" ("Acoustic Filter Assisted System Tuning") system, in which acoustic chambers were placed inside the housing, also with the aim of housing resonance damping. The asymmetrical housing also has the advantage that no standing waves can build up inside and there is no interference on the surface of the housing.

According to the manufacturer, the Pioneer RM-05 has a frequency response of 45 Hz - 50 kHz, which, however, corresponds to the typical calculation of all manufacturers of small monitors. As expected, nothing works for linear operation without a suitable subwoofer, which should take over from 60 Hz at the latest. The maximum sound pressure given by the manufacturer is 104 dB SPL Peak @ 1 m. The housing was designed as a bass reflex, with the opening on the front.

Turning the monitor opens up a wide range of control options, especially in the filter area. Generally unusual, Pioneer has installed 3 filter sections here, which, in addition to the treble at 10 kHz (+1dB, 0dB, -1dB, -2dB) and the bass at 50 Hz (+2dB, 0dB, -2dB, -4dB), also the mids Adjust 140 Hz (0dB, -1dB, -2dB, -4dB). A daring undertaking, since it is precisely the mids that decide the ultimate sound of a monitor. In my opinion, the selected frequency seems too low, but the listening test should show this later.

The professional variant in the form of XLR and the budget variant in the form of cinch are covered as connections, TRS plugs are searched for in vain. In addition, we also find the useful (and still ignored by many manufacturers) auto standby activation on the panel, the level control (0db to -40dB), the on/off switch, and the low-heat device socket along with a fine-wire fuse. Unfortunately, the level control has no grid, i. H. below 0dB the leveling of the panorama triangle is left to the subjective ear. The power-saving mode takes effect after about 25 minutes and reduces the power consumption to 0.3 watts.

Cooling fins were installed in the upper part of the housing, in which two threaded bushes were embedded. Obviously, these are used for possible wall mounting, but I could not find any accessories for this. If you decide to do this, you should choose the ultra-heavy variant, I would like to briefly refer to the leverage at almost 10 kilograms and a housing depth of over 20 centimeters.

Practice

Let's briefly review the advantages of a coaxial loudspeaker. Due to the common acoustic axis, there are only minimal runtime differences, coupled with high phase fidelity. In particular, this leads to a good, three-dimensional representation of the sound material. Exactly this can also be attested to the Pioneer RM-05. After I placed the pair on tripods, with all filters at zero and the volume at maximum, the system delivers a refreshingly precise stereo triangle, which is rather unusual for the housing size. The depth gradation is very good, paired with precise impulse reproduction. Due to the low weight, the woofer does not choke at high volumes and does not lose its orientation even with a comparatively large excursion.

However, what you immediately notice about the speaker is its primary area of application. It is not for nothing that the Pioneer RM-05 is listed by its parent company on the company website in the DJ products segment. First, the monitor is allowed to try a natural drum set, which was only recorded with 2 room microphones. This is where the Pioneer RM-05 can demonstrate its strengths directly in the form of spatial imaging. Even without filter adjustment, the sound is balanced for a monitor of this size, although a clear over-presence of the high mids between 4-5 kHz clearly stands out. However, this can be coped with with a softly recorded drum set, since the sound-defining frequencies are mostly played in other regions below and above the high mids.

Next comes an analog vintage drum loop with synthetic sound generation, a challenge for all impulse responses. Here, too, the Pioneer RM-05 holds up very well, although it is now clearly reaching its limits in the bass range. As expected, a subwoofer has to intervene in the sound, otherwise the monitor will run out of air. Nevertheless, the system can come up with an unexpectedly high volume, which you wouldn't believe the little dwarf is capable of. By slightly lowering the mids, there is also a pleasant low-mid relief, and I also have to lower the highs, otherwise the analogue hi-hat will hiss a lot. Also in this segment a good rating for the Pioneer RM-05.

Now we come to the other side of the coin. Complete tape recordings of a guitar-heavy band, not yet mastered. Now the monitor gets into an area that suits it less, which is mainly due to the strong high-mid range. If clean pop guitars still get going very well, the weak points of the monitor are exposed with the first overdrive. The more the guitars gain in distortion, the more edgy, biting the sound becomes and gets more and more into the "gets exhausting" area. Unfortunately, lowering the treble does not bring the desired effect either, since we are now more in the segment of the crash cymbals or the overtones of the vocals, which unfortunately is above the important guitar range. However, the center control cannot help us either, since with a center frequency of 140 Hz it leads to a purification in the electric bass range, but this time it falls below the guitar range.

In order to throw a few more sticks between the legs of this basic character, I now use a mastered final mix with a high proportion of high-gain guitars. It's finally the end of the day in the high-mid range. While kick and bass are still very concise, the snare wobbles in the alarmingly sharp range. If the guitars, which have their highly compressed peak at 3-5 kHz, start playing, the dome tweeter bites your ears so much that you are inclined to turn down the volume immediately. The sound is so sharp that editing a metal production is impossible.

However, this should not be seen as a devaluation, because the Pioneer RM-05's field of application was and has never been designed for this area. You can already tell from the filter selection which style of music the monitor wants to achieve, and it does that very well.



Conclusion

With the Pioneer RM-05, the Japanese company clearly focuses on the DJ area in all its facets. The monitor is impulse faithful, has a very good spatial resolution, is solidly processed and offers a good near-field monitor for home recording or the budget studio.

On the other hand, the latent high-mid range leads to a disqualification in the rock and heavy sector, where high-gain guitars in particular provide a sharp and biting sound. Everyone has to decide for themselves to what extent the monitor meets their personal taste, but a retail price of just under 500 euros per box means that the competition is not to be underestimated.

TEST: Phonic PAA3X

 It roars, it whistles, it scratches. Whether in the studio, live or with the home surround sound system, you always and everywhere fight against overemphasis, frequency holes and phase problems. Even a trained ear sometimes has to capitulate to the complexity of the frequencies, which ultimately always calls for an analyzer. With the Phonic PAA3X, the Taiwanese manufacturer has a handheld version on the market that can display far more than just frequencies.

The features of the Phonic PAA3X

With the dimensions (H x W x D) 156 mm x 90 mm x 37.5 mm, the Phonic PAA3X is very handy, similar to a hand-held TV from the eighties, with the weight of just over 300 grams after a few minutes can already pull a little on the biceps. In terms of haptics, it is more reminiscent of a volume control on a toy, it could indeed have been made more valuable.

It does not offer a solution in the form of automatic calibration or anything similar. Well then, what can the Phonic PAA3X do?

Basically self-explanatory for anyone who has dealt with the subject. The dB range is flexible, so that you can measure up to 130 dB at very low as well as at high volumes. Nothing extraordinary if it weren't for the EQ Setting function. A very nice feature where the analyzer shows which frequency is over-present and which under-present with a 0 dB line placed in the middle by means of a corresponding line up and down. Ideally, a flat line would appear here.

2.) Reverberation measurement

The eternal fight of the FOH against the room acoustics. This RT 60 algorithm measures the time it takes for a signal to drop 60Db. This can be done without filtering (linear weighting) or with an applied filter.

You wouldn't believe how often, even with high-end components, the polarity of the loudspeakers used was simply not set up correctly. This can be checked very quickly by outputting a test tone.

Of course, most see the application area of the Phonic PAA3X in live sound reinforcement or for the purpose of optimizing monitoring in a control room. Errors can be found quickly, but fixing them can mean a lot more than simply tweaking the 31-band EQ. Unfortunately, spatial misdesigns or unfavorable reflections cannot be solved from the start, but at least you know very quickly where the problem comes from using the Phonic PAA3X.

However, people tend to forget that a mobile analyzer can provide very good service in the rehearsal room, in the home hi-fi system or even inside a car. How often does the bass boom in the rehearsal room for all other instruments up to the stand-up collar, whereby a different positioning of the box or a skilful operation of the graphic EQ means a relief for the colleagues.

Anyone who wants to optimize their vehicle will also be happy with the Phonic PAA3X, provided they are not of the monkey-maker species who make every traffic light stop torture with their bass-heavy Eurobeat droning.

Rarely have I been able to complete an all-round acoustic analysis in such a short time, and without changing the device. A kind of acoustic Swiss army knife. We recommend.

TEST: Peli 1510-000-110

 I don't know about you, but I've always had an aversion to trollies. trollies? Yes, exactly, these pull-behind transport solutions with pull-out handles, be it as a simple suitcase or the really tough department, as a shopping bag, like my grandmother used to do, with plastic wheels and blue-green-black -checkered outfit!

Yes I know. The screams echoed into my office about “comfortable”, “back-friendly” and “oh-so-practical” and above all, UNCOOL! Yes, I said it, the wheel-assisted grinding solutions always feel like a butter ride with electric blanket bargains for me.

I still remember too well how, on my DOMAIN tour in 2005, half of the oh-so-tough tour entourage, three formations that are traded under the “Metal” banner, left the Nightliner with partly checkered (!) trollies to Hours later, hitting the inclined headbanger violently around the ears with the heavy metal. What a break in style!

But what if a far-sighted company built a really “cool” trolley that also had highly practical transportation value? In this case, even I could be convinced of the practical equivalent of the roller boxes....

Lo and behold, the American top dog when it comes to plastic cases, the Peli company based in Torrance, California, set out to bring the trolley closer to even a stinker like me.

Like all Peli cases, the case with the extensive product designation 1510-000-110 is made of a special plastic mixture that meets military standards.

The case is considered shockproof, waterproof and resistant to oil and grease. Should you come up with the spontaneous idea of carrying out some fitness-promoting paramilitary exercises on a day-off of your tour to the shawm-like screams of your tour leader, you can take responsibility for all Peli cases in terms of resistance and durability ;-)

Peli cases are characterized by the fact that they are significantly lighter than comparable laminated wood solutions with the same stability, but you should not give in to the illusion that you can achieve heavy-duty resilience with a wall thickness on the level of a cleaning bucket .

With an unladen weight of just under 6 kilograms and external dimensions of 55.9 cm x 36.1 cm x 22.9 cm, the 1510-000-110 is also in a weight class that is relatively easy to master, but which is slightly higher than its visual appearance.

Based on the internal dimensions of 51.4 cm x 28.9 cm x 19.2 cm, you can also see that due to the various bulges and reinforcements, between approx. 4-7 cm are used for the protective cover.

Inside, the case comes with 2 pieces of 6.5 cm thick foam panels and a narrow bottom foam insert. The appropriate bulges for your equipment are cut out of these plates, there are no cut-outs made in advance.

A little tip on the side, the best tool for cutting foam is an electric knife, which is otherwise only used to carve and cut up dead animals! The otherwise rather brittle and uncomfortably yielding foam cuts like butter.

A layer of convoluted foam is embedded in the lid of the case to provide counter-pressure from above. Unfortunately, the foam on the lid of this product from Peli was only clamped, not glued, with the result that, in my opinion, the foam in question detaches too easily from the lid with a slight pull.

Of course you can fix the foam later with Velcro or something similar, but I think a factory pre-installation is appropriate.

The entire construction is extremely torsion-resistant and was not able to record any scratches, deformations or even breakage on the lid and side parts, even after I hopped around wildly.

I also have to admit defeat to the "hated" trolley function, the mechanical implementation is too good, along with the above-mentioned simplifications.

Men indeed, who studies my reviews a bit more closely, can relatively easily read out my weakness for massive and safe packaging in the instrumental area, i.e. cases, respectively flightcases.

Too many valuable products I have already destroyed in my naive beginner days due to my own loading errors, or worse, handling errors of third parties, or they were so badly scratched, bent or dented that their value or their usability fell into the bottomless pit.

However, one thing has always bothered me when using multi-layer plywood, the construction-conditioned partly massive increase in weight. Depending on the size of the case and the quality of the workmanship, the weight of the packaging exceeds the net weight of the contents many times over, which can cause problems with an appropriate backline.

I remember very well my last European tour, which I completed with my band DOMAIN, and the driver of the nightliner informed us before the start of the tour that our backline exceeded the weight of the double-axle trailer, which can be loaded with several tons, by quite a bit due to our "proper" packaging...

Therefore, the industry has always been looking for a heavy-duty plastic that has a strength comparable to plywood, but is much lighter in weight.

One of the suppliers of such products is the American company Peli, which offers a comprehensive range of products for almost every size of case or case on the market.

Construction

Peli boasts the build quality of the American military and certifies its products a shockproof, waterproof and oil / grease repellent construction. Additionally, the manufacturer incorporates a pressure equalization valve due to its strong seal, which is especially necessary in aircraft storage compartments.

The black case comes with internal dimensions of 43.2 cm x 29.0 cm x 15.6 cm, external dimensions of 47.0 cm x 35.7 cm x 17.6 cm and a weight of only 4 kg. The weight is all the more astonishing, as my flightcase briefcase, which was only made of 7 mm plywood and only with small metal corners, already has the same weight and opens up about 50% less storage space.

The Peli case is my massive handle of the brand extra-heavy-duty equipped and has a soft rubber compound on the lower grip surface to increase the grip.

The entire case including the handle has, in contrast to many handles or cases, which I have come across from Far East manufacturing in recent times, no (!) Evaporation of solvents or even plasticizers. Very good! You do not believe what I had partly for stink glands in the last time to the test.....

The case is closed by two combined tilt/snap latches, which give an extremely durable impression. All moving plastic parts are guided over recessed metal pins, just like a standard hinge. This prevents the plastic from losing some of its stability with every movement, similar to a nail that is bent back and forth several times.

Maybe some of you remember the Gibson guitar cases from the eighties, often called "Lenor bottles". They had exactly this problem and inevitably led to the snap locks breaking off over the years.

Metal-reinforced holes were placed to the left and right of the latches, where the Peli can be secured against unauthorized opening with normal padlocks if necessary.

The design of the case has some details that immediately show that a fair amount of experience has been involved in the construction. For example, the rear supports, which hold the case vertically, were shaved off at the sides at an angle of about 70 degrees to simplify folding and still give the case sufficient stability.

Or the fact that when the lid is opened, it comes to a pressure point and can only be moved to full opening with a little force. This prevents the lid from slamming down when the case is open and damaging contents, or the case itself, if it is inadvertently set upright.

To protect the contents of the case from moisture, a rubber lip has been embedded in the lid, which fits flush when the case is closed, thus completely sealing the case.

Nubbed foam was attached to the inside of the lid, but it is only clamped in place and not glued. Personally, I don't consider this concept to be the optimal fastening, since the foam comes off quite easily when pulled slightly downwards. If necessary, however, the whole thing can be quickly fixed with some special glue or even double-sided tape.

A freely configurable floor divider is attached to the transport tray from the factory, which consists of four long and nine short individual elements. These can now be individually assembled by means of Velcro tape for individual compartments of different sizes. A simple and yet very effective solution.

The individual elements are of high quality, covered with a water-repellent synthetic fiber and consist of a flexible plastic/rubber mix on the inside.



Practice

To test the case directly times on its waterproofness, I took it this morning simply with the shower! Long-haired shaggy with equipment case in the bathroom, the facial expression of my wife you should have seen ;-)

But what can I say, neither water nor soap penetrated into the interior of the case, the rubber lips provided a practical seal.

Furthermore, trampoline jumping followed on the edges, the side parts and on the middle of the suitcase. Even though with my 71 kg I'm not exactly one of the massive representatives of my guild, here too no yielding, bending or even breaking could be heard.

The flexible bottom divider allows you to configure the case individually to your personal transport needs. TEST: Pedaltrain Floorboards

It is truly rare in the instrument sector that a groundbreaking concept is only found decades after a problem has been established and then turns the entire musical instrument sector upside down at a pig's gallop. This is what happened with the Pedaltrain company, which came to grips with the eternal problem of slipping and twisted floor pedals with a shockingly simple solution. Once you've decoupled from the single wah wah and the amp's channel switch and want to add more pedal mines to your setup, the problem of positioning the effects, routing the patch cords and powering the pedals inevitably arises.

Here, the male tinkering instinct with a penchant for gigantic dimensions lead to sometimes square meter-like board outgrowths, which require their own case, in which otherwise only live mixers from AC/DC are transported. To avoid such excesses, which is particularly due to the excessive cable routing, the company Pedaltrain raised the two-dimensional wooden board to a three-dimensional ramp and a system was born, which offered plenty of space for underground cable routing due to the strut-based frame construction. Lastly, we have 4 regular 9 V outputs, which do not exceed 500 mA in their total output. However, since most pedals get by on 100 - 200 mA anyway, this shouldn't be a problem.


Pedaltrain Volto

The highlight of the test setup, however, is a soap mold-like white plastic case and goes by the name Volto. Basically nothing more than a 2000 mA high-capacity battery, it replaces the flood of 9 V batteries in a very slim case that can even be stuck under Nano and Metro 20 boards. Equipped with 2 pieces of 9 V outputs and two daisy-chain cables, theoretically 6 effect pedals can be supplied with sufficient power. At about 200 mA on average, this would mean an average of 10 hrs.

A new charge of the product takes about 6 hours, an appropriate power supply along with a short cable is included with the product. In case of doubt, however, the cigarette lighter of the band bus or the local mobile charger will also do.

What a help a bent piece of sheet metal can be. Short problem description: Two identically high pedals behind each other on the board, you want to switch the rear effect on/off and thereby adjust the potentiometers of the front effect unit or break them off in the worst case. Practice

The practical operation of the boards can be dealt with quickly. They do exactly what they are supposed to do. Thanks to the aluminum construction, the boards are very light and can be transported easily. In terms of workmanship, a little more care could be taken here and there, but let's be honest, with a pedalboard, it doesn't really matter if there is possibly still a weld on the underside.

The included Velcro is neat, however, I personally always prefer the attachment with cable ties. Even the strongest Velcro can jerk loose, for example, when transported upright in the band bus. The gig bags protect the effects very well, but as already mentioned suffer from the below-average zippers.

The two power supplies Pedaltrain Powertrain 1250 and Powertrain Volto leave a very good impression, although one should think again around the corner with the flagship battery Volto. 10 hrs of use means "can", not "must". If you have, for example, a high-quality reverb in FX mode, you may gladly deal with 2-3 hours of operation.

Furthermore, effects in the serial FX loop of your amp, Volto empty, means amp dead! My tip, leave an emergency battery in the effect pedal, pull the power plug in an emergency and bring the show to an end with battery voltage. Furthermore, once the Volto is empty it needs a minimum charge to be able to supply the effects with voltage again during the ongoing charging operation. The Volto is not an iPhone battery!

And last but not least, test if your effects work in daisy chain mode. There are some effects that require their own output, no matter how much mA is behind it, which in turn means that in the worst case you will only have power for 2 effects pedals!




Conclusion

The class leader in terms of effect boards shows many strengths and marginal weaknesses in the current edition. As before, Pedaltrain shines with an innovative concept and fills the gap to a very good sole supplier by upgrading the portfolio with stand-alone power supplies and additional products. The Powertrain 1250 and Volto power supplies show excellent detailed solutions and will quickly become an industry standard in my opinion.

The quality drop in the workmanship caused by the Chinese production should be easily controlled by better final inspection and higher-quality components.

Aware of this, the "Mother-Of-All-Modern-Pedalboards", the American manufacturer Pedaltrain has brought with the Pedaltrain Spark a power supply on en market, which comes up with some very interesting detail solutions. So then, look down and ran to the Tretminen.

All is well, all is well, Pedaltrain Spark is screwed in place and .... the power supply slides back and forth underneath the board! Incomprehension spreads among the tester. Wrong dimensions? Monday production? Or incompetence of the tester?

A short phone call with the German sales department brought the solution. I was allowed to join the long line of colleagues who had made the same mistake. The dimensions of the bracket are designed so that on the pedal must already be the Velcro strips on which the retaining bracket is placed. These 2 millimeters make the difference between slippery sliding and bombproof hold. ATTENTION, small tip from practice, happened to me during a show at the Wacken Open Air. If you use a daisy chain cable, where not all sockets are used, tape the free sockets, so that the positive pole can not come against ground. TEST: Peavey XR 1220

 power mixer! Ouch, I can already see the first of them squinting their eyes tightly, while the rest of the pack storms towards the exit of the room, screaming because of their forcibly acquired experiences in the past.

Don't we all know the drama, especially the writer of this article? Hopelessly undersized power amplifiers with 1x 120 watts mono, 4 channels, one of which has cinch inputs, no proper gain control and a 7-band hum equalizer for the already pressureless overall concept? And then please set up the supplied "boxes" at ear height in front of you at a distance of 20 centimeters, so that you have even the slightest chance of asserting yourself against the bass drum alone. An ice-cold shiver runs down my spine, it was horrible, lousy, out of the question!

Alternatively, you could of course choose the slightly more powerful variation from other manufacturers (2x 150 watts - Hoho!), which then switched off at regular intervals of about 30 minutes due to overheating due to the poor ventilation concept when placed in a rack. The good atmosphere at rehearsals and shows was programmed right away, including a refreshing announcement from the organizer... Oh yes, the construction was incredibly heavy and pretty unwieldy, of course!

Due to digital power amplifiers, such power mixer horror scenarios are definitely a thing of the past, at least if you can believe the performance specifications of the Peavey XR 1220 mixer I was testing. 2x 600 watts at 4 ohms speak a clear language and also want to convince in the context of a noisy rock band.

The Peavey XR 1220 is a 20-channel mixer with an internal stereo power amplifier. As is almost always the case with products in this price range, the motto here is "Designed in the USA, assembled in China". Occasionally one wonders whether any product of stage and studio technology is still not built in the same totalitarian state.

In addition to the easier handling compared to a separate construction of mixer and power amplifier, there is also no wiring, which, for example, significantly reduces the assembly time of the product. In general, it is noticeable that the designers have primarily devoted themselves to the "all-in-one" vocal system use, so the product also has a built-in multi-FX unit and a stereo equalizer. Everything together weighs just under 11 kilograms, which used to weigh just one mains transformer of a Peavey CS 800.

In terms of connection technology, the input section runs in the usual way, that is to say XLR, or line input via jack plus loop-in point in front of the catch-up amplifier. Behind the gain controller and a subsonic filter at 80 Hz is a classic three-band tone control (shelving treble +/- 15 dB - 12 kHz), (shelving bass +/- 18 dB - 80 Hz), (bandpass low mids +/- 15 dB - 450 Hz) and a combined two-band high-mid controller, which starts at a reduction of 2 kHz up to - 15 dB and increases the range by 4 kHz up to + 15 dB.

Two pre-fade monitor outs support the live character of the product, followed by the panorama control, a clip LED, a signal LED, a mute switch, a 60 mm fader and a PFL switch. So far, so standard. Channels 19 and 20 manage any stereo signals that may occur, such as keyboards, or feed various stereo lines such as notebooks or MP3 players.

In the total area, greater attention was paid to eliminating any feedback, in accordance with the primary area of application of the product. The mixer has the RTA connection of a measurement microphone. Over two test runs, the mixer, in combination with the test microphone and noise generator, analyzes any feedback loops that may occur and adjusts the equalizer accordingly.

In addition to the standard full-range operation, the product can also be operated as a satellite solution plus an external active woofer or as a double mono full-range plus a passive monitor. Furthermore, the classic active monitor solution is of course possible via the respective sends. A small P.A. can also be connected via two regular XLR outs. be approached while using the internal power amplifier for the operation of the monitors. On the back, the XR 1220 comes with a (tacky) on/off switch, the IEC connector and four Speakon connections (2x left / right each).


Practice

Even if the idea of protecting the environment is commendable, it is impractical to only include the manual as a CD-ROM and not even have a quick-start sheet at the start. If you want to look something up on the spot, you're stuck without a laptop or iPhone. I wonder when you can only look up the manuals on the Internet and the mixer comes with WLAN.

While the power mixer's steel frame leaves a good impression, all the moving components on the surface frankly fail to impress me. While the EQ knobs and the faders do their job with some play in the lateral guidance, but all in all still quite passable, the sliders of the sum equalizer unfortunately work mechanically at the lowest level. Notchy, without guide resistance and equipped with sharp edges, you just want to get the setting over with quickly so that you don’t have to adjust it again if possible. Due to the lack of counters on the housing, the endless controllers in the FX area also fall flat through the grid of mechanical demands.

In terms of sound, the filters operate in the middle segment. With the combined two-way high-mid control, even an inexperienced user can generate a practical sound in just a few simple steps, which can be more advantageous than one might imagine at first glance, especially for singers who are not technically experienced. Anyone who has ever seen an average frontman banging away at the parametric equalizer knows what I'm talking about ;-). Due to the somewhat hard design, the rest is in the midfield in terms of sound, where it delivers average values, but ultimately cannot cause any damage.

With the XR 1220, Peavey delivers a flexible power mixer whose primary area of application was designed for vocal system operation. Because of the powerful power amplifier, the relatively easy handling and the high flexibility, the mixer will find its buyers, although in my opinion some mechanical processing features should be reconsidered.
